00:00:00.040 --> 00:00:04.068
Did last week feel like drinking from a fire hose with all the information I gave you?

00:00:04.068 --> 00:00:09.109
Fear not; today's episode will be more of a sip than a guzzle.

00:00:09.109 --> 00:00:10.824
Let's get to it.

00:00:21.701 --> 00:00:29.714
In episode 3, we discussed some problematic lyrics in popular Elevation, Hillsong, Jesus Culture and Bethel songs.

00:00:29.714 --> 00:00:34.731
I know it was a lot of information and I'm sure you are still processing it.

00:00:34.731 --> 00:00:35.881
I get it.

00:00:36.421 --> 00:00:45.250
I felt overwhelmed during lockdown to the point that I stopped singing worship at church and at home I couldn't even bring myself to listen to Christian music.

00:00:45.250 --> 00:00:53.481
This torture went on for a long time until I started noticing a negative change in my relationship with God.

00:00:53.481 --> 00:00:56.368
I told myself I couldn't worship.

00:00:56.368 --> 00:01:00.762
I dreaded going to church because I wasn't sure what songs would be sung.

00:01:01.984 --> 00:01:11.596
In episode one of season two, I mentioned an audiobook I listened to by the Gettys called Sing why and how we Should Worship.

00:01:11.596 --> 00:01:20.093
In their book they discuss the importance of worship, what worship really means and who should partake in it, and when.

00:01:20.093 --> 00:01:23.349
It's a short but impactful read.

00:01:23.349 --> 00:01:29.673
Through this book, god shook me awake and transformed my thinking about the subject.

00:01:29.673 --> 00:01:48.519
My anxious heart started to relax and because of it I was able to get away from what was starting to become a self-inflicted legalism trap trap.

00:01:48.540 --> 00:01:53.831
Today's episode is meant to be encouraging, as I share how I overcame the near-legalistic mindset I had about the information I was downloading into my brain and heart.

00:01:53.831 --> 00:02:02.161
After that, I'm going to share some worship songs and bands you can listen to in place of the songs you are leaving behind.

00:02:02.161 --> 00:02:09.455
I want to say a special thank you to everyone who has listened to this four-part series on true worship.

00:02:09.455 --> 00:02:18.391
I have enjoyed sharing my heart and the truth with you, and I hope this series has resonated with you and helped you as well.

00:02:18.391 --> 00:02:21.302
If it has, please share the show with someone you know who would benefit from hearing this information.

00:02:21.323 --> 00:02:25.027
Please share the show with someone you know who would benefit from hearing this information.

00:02:25.027 --> 00:02:30.375
It's important that we care for our loved ones in the same way we want to care for ourselves.

00:02:30.375 --> 00:02:37.662
This is why I chose to talk about this subject.

00:02:37.662 --> 00:02:42.152
I couldn't keep this knowledge to myself any longer and needed to share what I was learning with others to help them stay on the right path too

00:02:42.152 --> 00:02:42.152
.

00:02:43.620 --> 00:02:55.812
Legalism If you grew up in the church, perhaps you have heard this word before and know its meaning, but for those of you who don't know, or who grew up in a church where it was never mentioned.

00:02:55.812 --> 00:03:03.331
Here is the definition Dependence on moral law rather than on personal religious faith.

00:03:03.331 --> 00:03:13.414
I was blessed to grow up in a Christian family, but I will say that in our Christianity we had some legalistic tendencies.

00:03:13.414 --> 00:03:16.002
I don't want to throw my family under

00:03:16.042 --> 00:03:16.804
the bus either.

00:03:16.804 --> 00:03:24.729
They were supportive and loving, even still to this day, but we had flaws, as every family does.

00:03:24.729 --> 00:03:34.270
As I am working on making my spiritual journey my own, I have noticed all the areas where I have legalistic tendencies.

00:03:34.270 --> 00:03:41.673
I have been able to rid them in certain areas, but some are rooted deeper and I am still working through

00:03:41.712 --> 00:03:41.853
them.

00:03:42.961 --> 00:03:51.912
When it came to this situation with Christian and worship music, I found myself creeping back into the comfortable, my legalism.

00:03:51.912 --> 00:04:03.971
My husband was the recipient of all my revelations and new convictions and he wasn't as interested at first in this subject like I was at first in this subject, like I was.

00:04:03.971 --> 00:04:07.375
He would tell me that he worships God, not the song.

00:04:07.375 --> 00:04:15.985
While I appreciated that approach, I tried to remind him that you can't worship God with false theology.

00:04:15.985 --> 00:04:26.612
Since he had different convictions from me at the start of my journey, we would get infrequent arguments that left both of us frustrated and no one bending to the other's will.

00:04:26.612 --> 00:04:39.208
While he agrees with me on this issue some more now, he doesn't let it affect him in the way that I let this subject matter affect me, because I grew up legalistic.

00:04:39.850 --> 00:04:48.362
Ana wanted to please God by doing what was right, and what was right was not listening to bad theology bands and songs.

00:04:48.362 --> 00:05:02.884
My heart was in the right place, but I was Kristyn about things wrong, because some of those bands still have solid biblical songs and I don't know the hearts of each person in the band singing the songs.

00:05:02.884 --> 00:05:15.903
Here is my personal conviction in a nutshell I can't seem to bring myself to look past the band and false doctrines in these churches to listen to their biblically sound music.

00:05:15.903 --> 00:05:28.553
This is my personal conviction that I was trying to force on my husband, some friends and contemplating reaching out to the worship team to share my thoughts with them as well.

00:05:28.553 --> 00:05:34.391
It's one thing to share information to help enhance someone's life.

00:05:34.391 --> 00:05:43.451
It's another to do it with the agenda of changing them over to your team just for the sake of making yourself feel better about things.

00:05:43.451 --> 00:05:49.632
That was not my intention, but you wouldn't have known, by the way I was going about things.

00:05:51.761 --> 00:05:56.172
Anna how did you climb out of the musical legalism you created for yourself?

00:05:56.172 --> 00:05:59.187
I'm glad you asked my friend.

00:05:59.187 --> 00:06:04.771
I was convicted by God through the audiobook reading of the Getty's book.

00:06:04.771 --> 00:06:16.091
Kristen Getty has such a wonderful Irish accent I love accents and she has such a heart for God and the spiritual discipline of worship.

00:06:16.091 --> 00:06:29.153
In the book she mentions how worship is for God and we should do it with our whole being all the time we need to worship, whether we want to, can't sing, or whether we like the song or not.

00:06:29.153 --> 00:06:37.411
Sure, we don't sing unbiblical worship, but we are commanded in scripture to make a joyful noise to the Lord.

00:06:37.411 --> 00:06:44.908
If you can't do that because the song isn't biblically sound, then praise him with words and thank him.

00:06:44.908 --> 00:06:47.802
There is always something to be thankful for.

00:06:47.802 --> 00:06:52.213
This is my paraphrase of the content of their book.

00:06:54.360 --> 00:07:01.113
I realized I was making the worship experience at home and at church about me rather than God.

00:07:01.113 --> 00:07:09.927
That convicted me so fast, and I was devastated that on my journey to finding truth I had managed to get sucked back into legalism.

00:07:09.927 --> 00:07:31.894
The Lord set me free to worship him in the way I was intended to, not years ago, not even months ago, but more like a few weeks ago, to be exact, a week before my first episode of season two came out and a week before our church started a three-part series on the importance of true worship.

00:07:31.894 --> 00:07:37.824
Amazing how God works right With my mindset changed.

00:07:38.206 --> 00:07:42.016
I worship God, not the band, like my husband said.

00:07:42.016 --> 00:07:43.699
Band like my husband said.

00:07:43.699 --> 00:08:02.365
I Jesus make sure to keep God as the focus, not the songs or how I feel about them, and if we sing Jesus a song that seems unbiblically sound Jesus I will take the time to be quiet and reflective on the goodness of God.

00:08:02.365 --> 00:08:08.399
At home, I am more intentional about worshiping first thing in the morning.

00:08:08.399 --> 00:08:15.358
I find it makes my day a little better a lot better actually and my mood.

00:08:15.358 --> 00:08:28.903
I will sing old hymns that I remember disliking from my childhood because I thought they were old and boring, but now they are my biblically solid best friends.

00:08:28.903 --> 00:08:36.753
I even hearken back to my teen and early college years, where some of the worship was also biblically sound.

00:08:36.753 --> 00:08:48.264
The song Heart of Worship is one of my favorites from my adolescence because it defines where I am currently in my worship journey now.

00:08:50.431 --> 00:08:55.754
I'm coming back to the heart of worship.

00:08:55.754 --> 00:09:09.807
When it's all about you, all about you, jesus, I'm sorry, lord, for the thing I've made it.

00:09:09.807 --> 00:09:14.317
When it's all about you, it's all about you, jesus.

00:09:14.317 --> 00:09:18.533
It's all about you, jesus.

00:09:25.549 --> 00:09:27.673
Those are some powerful lyrics and hopefully resonate with your heart as well.

00:09:27.673 --> 00:09:31.700
I try to include my children in my worship experience at home too.

00:09:31.700 --> 00:09:34.784
I ask them which song they want to sing.

00:09:34.784 --> 00:09:46.736
Usually it's Waymaker, sometimes it's Jesus Loves Me, this is the Day, or the Bible song, the B-I-B-L-E.

00:09:46.736 --> 00:09:56.038
It's so important for me to share with my kids the importance of worshiping so they have a right mindset about it, unlike I did.

00:09:56.038 --> 00:09:59.683
I don't want them to struggle like I have been struggling.

00:09:59.683 --> 00:10:02.474
My eldest son doesn't like to sing.

00:10:02.474 --> 00:10:03.956
He says he can't.

00:10:03.956 --> 00:10:17.014
I remind him that the Bible says to make a joyful noise and encourage him to hum a song then, because God is worthy of praise and worship, whether he wants to do it or not.

00:10:17.014 --> 00:10:20.504
Here's the bottom line, my friends.

00:10:20.504 --> 00:10:23.916
Music is only half the worship experience.

00:10:23.916 --> 00:10:31.653
We should be worshiping God in our daily walk from the moment we wake up until we take our last breath.

00:10:31.653 --> 00:10:34.717
God is worthy all the time.

00:10:34.717 --> 00:10:45.860
Even if your musical influencer fails, your pastor fails, your spouse or children fail or you fail, God never fails.

00:10:45.860 --> 00:10:51.753
Now we're going to move on to some solid biblical music suggestions I found throughout the last several years.

00:10:53.315 --> 00:10:55.356
Number one the Gettys.

00:10:55.356 --> 00:10:57.860
They're an Irish family.

00:10:57.860 --> 00:11:06.240
A lot of their music has a Celtic bent to it, which I love, and if you love it you should check them out.

00:11:06.240 --> 00:11:10.894
Their songs are very biblically sound and they sing a lot of hymns.

00:11:10.894 --> 00:11:15.102
Their daughters also will sing as well, which is very adorable.

00:11:15.102 --> 00:11:18.634
Number two is Shane and Shane.

00:11:18.634 --> 00:11:22.182
They've been around since like the 90s, I believe.

00:11:22.182 --> 00:11:29.019
They have a few albums I listen to that I love.

00:11:29.019 --> 00:11:33.325
They sing different psalms and hymns in those.

00:11:33.325 --> 00:11:38.479
My favorite song on one of their albums is called Psalm 23,.

00:11:38.479 --> 00:11:40.842
Surely Goodness, Surely Mercy.

00:11:40.842 --> 00:11:52.797
I have heard that they recently partnered with I think it's Elevation for a musical collaboration, so you might want to keep that in mind for their newer stuff.

00:11:52.797 --> 00:11:57.033
But you can't go wrong when someone's singing psalms.

00:11:57.033 --> 00:11:58.758
They're straight from the Bible.

00:12:00.360 --> 00:12:06.522
Number three is Alisa, another one that if you grew up in church you should really know who he is.

00:12:06.522 --> 00:12:15.604
I like a few of his albums, but the one I love the most is called I Surrender All 30 Classic Hymns.

00:12:15.604 --> 00:12:26.764
This is a personal favorite for me because my grandma used to listen to him and used to listen to the CD all the time, so whenever I listen to it it reminds me of her.

00:12:26.764 --> 00:12:28.753
She passed away a few years ago.

00:12:28.753 --> 00:12:33.342
My favorite song on the album is called I Surrender All.

00:12:33.342 --> 00:12:35.572
It chokes me up every time.

00:12:37.176 --> 00:12:39.039
Number four is Alyssa Childers.

00:12:39.039 --> 00:12:42.231
I've talked about her before in other episodes.

00:12:42.231 --> 00:12:49.051
She just released a worship album and says that she allows Dylan to sing the songs royalty free.

00:12:49.051 --> 00:12:52.676
That is a plus for worship leaders who are listening right now.

00:12:52.676 --> 00:12:56.799
Number five is Chris Lizotte.

00:12:58.001 --> 00:13:01.745
I like his music biblically solid songs.

00:13:01.745 --> 00:13:05.278
He's got a great song called you Know my Name.

00:13:05.278 --> 00:13:12.100
His voice sounds a lot like Jacob Dillon from the Wallflowers, which is probably one of the other reasons why I like his music.

00:13:12.100 --> 00:13:17.160
So if you like the Wallflowers, you might want to check out this guy as well.

00:13:17.160 --> 00:13:20.917
Number six Caleb and Kelsey.

00:13:20.917 --> 00:13:24.274
I believe they are a husband and wife team.

00:13:24.274 --> 00:13:29.248
They have beautiful voices and they have great lyrics.

00:13:29.248 --> 00:13:30.671
You should check them out.

00:13:31.751 --> 00:13:34.075
Lastly, I have the Corner Room.

00:13:34.075 --> 00:13:38.941
They might be a family who produces this music.

00:13:38.941 --> 00:13:39.962
I'm not quite sure.

00:13:39.962 --> 00:13:43.572
There are some children who sing in it.

00:13:43.572 --> 00:13:44.654
That's why I think that.

00:13:46.119 --> 00:13:49.145
But they have great biblically based songs.

00:13:49.145 --> 00:13:53.214
They're literally bible verses in song form.

00:13:53.214 --> 00:14:00.604
This is perfect for your children to listen to if you're trying to instill Bible verses in them.

00:14:00.604 --> 00:14:05.378
A lot of times it's easier for us to learn a Bible verse through song.

00:14:05.378 --> 00:14:07.763
This might be a good avenue for you.

00:14:07.763 --> 00:14:25.784
There are some other ones that I could have shared with you, but I didn't want to be here all day with a laundry list of names when I could just try to share a link in my show notes today for my worship playlist that I listen to on Spotify.

00:14:25.784 --> 00:14:30.440
That way you can go in there and you can pick and choose what you might want to listen to.

00:14:30.440 --> 00:14:33.125
I have a disclaimer, though.

00:14:33.125 --> 00:14:38.568
I'm not going to say that every song in my playlist is absolutely problem free.

00:14:38.568 --> 00:14:46.025
I am learning through this journey to be discerning of what is heresy and what is just poor lyric choices.

00:14:46.025 --> 00:14:49.884
You don't need to take all my suggestions and run with them.

00:14:49.884 --> 00:15:01.645
I am constantly going through my music and listening to the songs again and again to see if perhaps I miss something, and then I make a judgment call on if I'm going to keep it in or not.

00:15:04.395 --> 00:15:10.658
As we close out season two, remember this is your relationship with God and you need to guard it.

00:15:10.658 --> 00:15:18.802
Podcasters like myself, dedicated to uncovering these issues within the Christian faith, can only do so much to guide you.

00:15:18.802 --> 00:15:21.989
It's up to you to always guard your faith.

00:15:21.989 --> 00:15:27.126
God's word says if we ask for wisdom, he will give it to us.

00:15:27.126 --> 00:15:31.799
He wants us to be wise in everything we do, so ask boldly.

00:15:31.799 --> 00:15:39.207
Don't believe something is safe simply because you heard it on a Christian radio station or at a church.

00:15:39.207 --> 00:15:42.663
Now it's your time to shine.

00:15:42.663 --> 00:15:47.566
Worship is about God, not us, so make sure you keep it that way.

00:15:48.355 --> 00:15:56.535
You may like a song or a band, but if the lyrics don't glorify God, is it worth your time and effort?

00:15:56.535 --> 00:16:06.527
Make sure you use your discernment tactics, that you learn throughout the episodes and also if you went deeper and listened to the resources that I listed.

00:16:06.527 --> 00:16:14.328
This process of discernment in music will be tough on you emotionally, but also a long process.

00:16:14.328 --> 00:16:26.467
I am still weeding through the songs I listen to after all these years, but it doesn't have to rule your life or alienate people because you are going on a crusade with it, like I did.

00:16:28.014 --> 00:16:31.645
Don't ever force your personal convictions onto someone else.

00:16:31.645 --> 00:16:37.924
They are personal for a reason and each person needs to make their own judgment calls.

00:16:37.924 --> 00:16:43.287
Their choice will be between them and God, which should free you.

00:16:43.287 --> 00:16:46.942
Lastly, have fun with the process.

00:16:46.942 --> 00:16:55.769
Don't look back, like Lot's wife did, at what she was leaving, but look fondly ahead to what new musical treasures you will find.

00:16:55.769 --> 00:17:00.767
I have discovered many hidden gems in some of these new bands and songs.

00:17:03.196 --> 00:17:07.263
All right, before we go, I have a few things I want to share with you.

00:18:13.310 --> 00:18:16.817
Lord, God, thank you so much for this time that we've had together.

00:18:16.817 --> 00:18:18.858
Thank you for the information we've learned.

00:18:18.858 --> 00:18:27.250
Thank you for the tools we now have to use our own discernment and to work on our personal relationships with you.

00:18:27.250 --> 00:18:42.578
I pray, Lord Jesus, for everyone who's listening right now, that their heart would be softened toward what you want to say to them, that they would be prepared for this journey and that they would walk in your truth and trust you through the process.

00:18:42.578 --> 00:18:45.561
In Jesus' name, I pray Amen.

00:18:46.604 --> 00:18:48.480
God bless you and have a good week.

00:18:48.480 --> 00:18:49.846
Bye.
